Happy New Year, friends!
With this being my first post of 2016, what better way to start than to share a few of my personal goals for this year!
I prefer not to call them resolutions because, by definition, a resolution is simply a decision to do or not to do something. In my opinion, these "decisions" can easily be altered by other thoughts we may have based on our mood or other motivating factors around us. A goal is defined as the object of a person's ambitions or effort, or a desired result. Even the definition is more satisfying!
Goal setting for the new year is much more inspiring to me and is something we should always strive to do and have throughout the year and throughout our lives. As I was writing my ideas down the other day, I realized that there were a few themes happening with all of my goals. Some are good for me, some are good for others, and some are purely for enjoyment and happiness, so here are my goals for 2016!
1. Be on time.
Time management is and has often been a major struggle of mine. I am totally that person who snoozes the alarm clock multiple times each morning. I am that girl who often underestimates how long it will take me to get ready. I am that person who underestimates how long it will take me to get where I need to go. I am almost always late, and when I stop and think about it, being late doesn't just reflect poor time management skills, but rather a type of selfishness. When I think about all of the real reasons why I'm late, it's because I feel like I am too tired, or I didn't start getting ready early enough, or I left my house too late. This year, I want to take responsibility for my actions and my selfishness, make plans to have better time management, and be on time.
2. Be consistent.
Consistency is another personal struggle I have, and it has been since I was a little girl. I am that person who wants to do everything and thinks that I can, until I stretch myself too thin, or start disappointing people, and eventually have to give something up. Then, I end up feeling like such a flaky person, and that is not something I want to be associate with. \Whether it's with my blog posts, my workouts, my goals, or whatever it may be, this year I am aiming to be more consistent.
3. Be more thankful.
While I am a thankful person, I want to make the effort to consciously be more appreciative of all of the wonderful people and things I have in my life and the many blessings God has given me. Believe it or not, I often struggle with having a negative mindset. It is so easy to succumb to complaining about our current situations and seeing how things can go from bad to worse, instead of seeing them as opportunities to learn or grow and being thankful for what I do have. I have an amazing husband, a wonderful family, a cozy home filled with love, great friends near and far, a successful job, and my faith in Jesus Christ. At the start and end of every day, that is all I really need and want.
4. Be more active.
While I am grateful for my job and the position I have, it is part of a very different lifestyle than I was used to leading and my no-longer teenage body is starting to notice the difference. Haha!
This year, instead of resolving to "join a gym," or "lose weight" or be a "thinspo," my goal is to be more active while doing activities that I enjoy since I am not a traditional workout type of girl. I prefer to spend the time I am "exercising" going for long walks with my husband, going on hikes, taking dance or barre classes, so that it doesn't feel like a workout and I can make memories as I do.
5. Drink more water.
Water is such a crucial part of our overall health, from our immune system to our digestive system and to our skin, and so easy to neglect! Instead of reaching for more caffeine, or a sugary beverage, my goal is to drink at least two large bottles of water per day. I'm sure my mind and body will be thank me, and be able to tell the difference!
6. Go to more concerts!
Last month, Ryan surprised me with tickets to a concert for several bands that I seriously wanted to see at ACL, but didn't. It was the KGSR Anniversary concert with George Ezra, Leon Bridges, and of Monsters and Men, and I can easily say it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. It was at my favorite venue (where I had previously seen Amos Lee live in concert) and the shows were amazing! Live music by wonderful artists just makes me feel so alive, free, and happy, and this year, I plan to see as many artists on my musical bucket list as we possibly can! Still on my must see list are: Coldplay, Ray LaMontagne, Mumford and Sons, Jack Johnson, Ben Rector, Vance Joy, Fink, Bon Iver, Kings of Leon, Goo Goo Dolls (preferably circa early 2000s), and Maroon 5. Crossed off my list recently are: Of Monsters and Men, Leon Bridges, Sean McConnell, Augustana, David Gray, Amos Lee, and John Mayer, but I would see all of them again in a heartbeat.
7. Go on more dates!
After a long day at work and a long commute, I love coming home and spending quality time with my sweet husband, but oftentimes, we get caught up in the routine and busyness of our everyday lives even after work, not to mention the distractions that come with it (ahem, Netflix, Facebook..). It is so easy to just stay home and veg every night, but this year, my goal is to plan (or help plan) specific, fun date night ideas that are easy for us to execute a few times per month. You could start by making a date night out of coming up with all of your great date ideas together! One of the best pieces of advice we were given before we got married was to "Never stop dating," and what that really meant was never stop pursuing, surprising, admiring, appreciating, flirting, or loving your spouse or significant other, and I believe it is so true. While a weekly or monthly date night won't solve all relational problems, it will give you both the opportunity to remember why you started and to focus on what is really important.
8. Speak Spanish fluently.
Even after growing up in South Texas and 6 years of Spanish classes throughout high school and college, sadly, I am still not fluent in Spanish. While I do have my "survival skills" in tact, I would love to be bilingual for so many reasons! After traveling abroad a few years ago, I realized how ignorant we as Americans can seem because we only speak one language. Language is such a beautiful thing to learn, and communication is a key part of life, so to be fluent in more than one would be so beneficial and neat! This year, instead of getting so frustrated and mad because of traffic during my long commutes to and from work every day, my goal is to brush up on my Spanish via Audiobooks! Then, another dream of mine is to learn Italian, as it is such a beautiful language and part of my family heritage.
You'll notice that all of my goals for this year are positive, versus a restrictive list of things not to do. I hope some of my goals inspire you to see your life, or opportunities, or people in a different light this year, and to inspire yourself by trying new things, things you've always wanted to do, or even things you're afraid to start, and that you just might even surprise yourself with how quickly or easily it happens!
